Headless Commerce in Dubai: Costs, Timeline and Fit

Headless commerce in Dubai starts around $2,000 for a fixed-price build and runs on Next.js with the Shopify Storefront API or Hydrogen. Here is what it costs, how long it takes and whether your store actually needs it.

Headless Commerce in Dubai: Costs, Timeline and Fit

Key takeaways

  • A headless Shopify build with us starts at $2,000. The price and scope are fixed and agreed in writing after a free 30-minute call.
  • Headless separates the storefront from the checkout. Shopify still takes payment and manages orders. Custom code on Next.js or Hydrogen controls everything a shopper sees.
  • Oleum Crete moved from a stock Shopify theme to a custom Hydrogen storefront and now sells eighteen times more oil a month.
  • PureNest shows headless built for a market entry. It had a true right-to-left Arabic layout and a day-and-night mode in the storefront from the start.
  • A brand doing under a few hundred orders a month on a clean theme rarely needs headless yet. The case gets stronger once the theme limits speed, design or bilingual layout.

What Headless Commerce Actually Means for a Shopify Store

Headless commerce means your online shop runs as two separate pieces. Shopify keeps the back end: products, stock, payments, orders and customers. Everything a shopper sees, from the homepage to the cart, is a separate website written in code, and it talks to Shopify through its Storefront API. Most founders who look into headless commerce in Dubai have heard it is faster and more flexible than a theme. Both are true. It is also more work than a theme, and that extra work is where the cost sits.

Storefront vs checkout: what stays on Shopify

On a standard store, the theme is the storefront. It is written in Shopify's Liquid templating language, and you can only do what the theme allows. When you go headless, the theme goes away, but most of Shopify stays exactly where it was.

What stays on Shopify:

  • Products, variants and inventory
  • Checkout and payment processing, including Apple Pay
  • Orders, fulfilment and customer accounts
  • Discount codes and the admin your team already uses

What moves to custom code:

  • Layout, navigation and every page template
  • Product pages, search, filtering and the cart
  • Animation, language switching and page speed

We keep checkout in Shopify on purpose. It is secure, your payment provider already works with it, and rebuilding it rarely pays for itself. The storefront is where a premium brand wins or loses the sale, so that is where the custom work goes.

Next.js and Hydrogen: the two paths we build on

Hydrogen is Shopify's own React framework for headless storefronts. It runs on Shopify's Oxygen hosting, which is free on Shopify plans except Starter. Next.js is a general-purpose React framework, usually hosted on Vercel.

Our rule of thumb is simple. If the shop is the whole business, we build on Hydrogen, because it stays closest to Shopify. If the storefront has to sit inside a wider site, pull in content from a separate CMS or share code with an app, we build on Next.js. Oleum Crete runs on Hydrogen. PureNest runs on Next.js 14 with the Shopify Storefront API.

What Headless Commerce Costs in Dubai

A headless Shopify build with Meant starts at $2,000. It is quoted as a fixed price for a written scope, agreed before any work starts. The price does not move unless you change the scope.

The wider market prices headless much higher. Weaverse puts headless Shopify builds at $10K to $150K+, rising past $300K for full composable scope. A UK planning range for 2026 runs from £8,000 to £40,000. One estimate puts headless at 8 to 10 times the year-one cost of a standard theme.

The spread is wide because "headless" covers everything from a focused storefront to a multi-system stack with a large team behind it. So an ecommerce website cost in Dubai tells you little until you know which of those you are buying.

What the $2,000 starting price covers

The starting price is for a focused build: one language, a modest catalogue, and the core templates a store needs, home, collection, product and cart, all connected to Shopify checkout. The written scope lists every page and feature, so you know exactly what the number buys before you agree to it.

What pushes the price up: catalogue size, bilingual builds, custom checkout features

Each of these adds work, and the scope names each one it includes.

  • Catalogue size. More product types mean more templates, deeper filtering and more variant logic.
  • Bilingual builds. Arabic right-to-left is a second layout, not a translation. Navigation, grids, icons and typography all flip, and every template has to be checked in both directions.
  • Custom checkout features. Subscriptions, gifting and bundles each need their own logic inside the limits Shopify's checkout allows.
  • App rebuilds. Review widgets, popups, chat and loyalty programmes do not carry over from a theme. Each one has to be reconnected.
  • Migration. Redirects, SEO carry-over and a domain cutover.
  • Content production. Copy, photography and film direction, if the current assets will not hold up in a better design.

Why fixed price beats hourly billing for this kind of build

Hourly billing pays the agency more the longer a build takes. Headless builds have real unknowns, so an hourly quote tends to grow as the work goes on. A fixed price forces both sides to settle the scope before anyone writes code, and it puts the risk of overruns on us. We do not bill hourly, and the first call costs nothing.

How Long a Headless Build Takes

The timeline goes into the written scope alongside the price, so you get a date as well as a number before you commit. Most of the variation comes from two things: the size of the scope, and how quickly content and decisions arrive from your side. Slow sign-offs slow a project more than the code does.

Every build follows the same sequence: scope, design, build, content, testing, then launch. A headless Shopify build takes longer than installing and styling a theme, because every template is written rather than configured. The same work is also what makes a Hydrogen storefront faster and more distinctive than the theme it replaces.

What adds time: right-to-left Arabic, migrations, custom checkout logic

  • Right-to-left Arabic. It is designed and tested as its own layout. An automatic mirror of the English site is not good enough.
  • Migrations. Moving an existing store means mapping redirects, protecting search rankings and switching the domain without taking the shop offline. Rebuilding frontend apps such as reviews, popups and loyalty programmes usually adds 2 to 4 weeks on its own.
  • Custom checkout logic. Anything that changes how the cart or checkout behaves needs extra building and extra testing against Shopify's rules.

Is Headless Commerce the Right Fit for Your Store

Often it is not, at least not yet. One common rule of thumb says headless is worth it from $5M in annual revenue. That threshold assumes agency pricing in the tens or hundreds of thousands. At our pricing the bar is lower, but the question is the same: will the storefront earn back what it costs?

Speed is part of the answer. A Google and Deloitte study linked every 100ms of page load improvement to a 1.11% increase in conversion rate. On a small store, that is a rounding error. On a store with real traffic and a premium price, it adds up quickly.

Signs a theme is holding you back

  • "It looks like every other Shopify store." The product is premium and the page is not.
  • Mobile pages are still slow after you have removed unused apps.
  • You need Arabic, and the theme's right-to-left version breaks the layout.
  • You want guided selling, editorial product stories or scroll-led pages, and the theme cannot do them.
  • You pay for several apps just to patch what the theme lacks.

Signs a theme is still fine for now

  • You are doing under a few hundred orders a month on a clean, fast theme.
  • You sell in one language.
  • Traffic is not converting because of weak photography or an unclear offer. Headless will not fix either.
  • You change the site weekly and need to do it without a developer.

What a Headless Storefront Looks Like Built for Dubai

Oleum Crete: replacing a theme with a Hydrogen storefront

Oleum Crete sells single-estate PDO extra virgin olive oil from the Messara Plain of Crete to the UAE. We replaced its stock Shopify template with a custom headless storefront on Hydrogen: cinematic scrolling, guided selling across five pressings, and an editorial buy moment with Apple Pay.

The build went beyond code. We directed a two-day photoshoot in Dubai, re-mastered the estate film, rebuilt the technical SEO and ran a zero-downtime domain cutover. The same oil now sells eighteen times more a month. The full story of how a custom headless Shopify storefront paid for itself is written up separately, along with the nine changes behind that eighteen-times increase.

PureNest: building bilingual layout and market-entry features in from day one

PureNest is a luxury bedding brand entering the UAE. We designed and built the storefront from scratch, headless on Next.js 14 with the Shopify Storefront API. It includes a complete catalogue, product pages, a slide-out cart, true right-to-left Arabic layout, and a warm day-and-night mode that suits a sleep brand.

It launched in a polished coming-soon mode, wired to switch on live Shopify selling the moment the brand is ready. For a market entry, that means the brand can be seen, indexed and shared before the first sale.

How We Scope and Quote a Headless Project

The free 30-minute call

You speak to Sufyan Adil, the founder, who leads every engagement. We book the call in your time zone and run it in English, Arabic or Greek. Our hours are Monday to Saturday, 9am to 6pm, and most of our clients are outside the UAE. Bring your store URL, a rough monthly order count and the one thing about the current site that annoys you most. By the end of the call you will know whether we think headless is worth it for you, and if not, what to fix instead.

The written scope and fixed price

If the fit is there, we send a written scope. It lists every page, feature, integration and migration step, with the timeline and one fixed price. Builds start at $2,000. There is no hourly rate and no percentage of anything.

What happens after you approve it

We design, build, load content, test on real devices and launch. If you want growth after launch, the same team can run Google and Meta ads on a month-to-month retainer. That retainer is never a percentage of ad spend, and the ad accounts are opened in your name. You can see our full range of website and storefront services if the project reaches beyond the shop.

Frequently asked questions

Does headless Shopify hurt or help SEO?

It helps when it is built properly and hurts when it is not. Pages need server rendering, clean metadata, structured data and a full redirect map from the old URLs. Done that way, faster pages and cleaner markup usually help rankings. Done carelessly, a migration can lose years of search equity.

Can I migrate an existing Shopify store to headless without losing orders or reviews?

Yes. Orders, customers and products stay in Shopify, because the back end does not change. Reviews usually live in a review app, so the data is kept, but the widget that displays them has to be rebuilt for the new storefront. The domain switch can be run with zero downtime, as it was for Oleum Crete.

Do I need a developer on staff after a headless site goes live?

No. Products, prices, stock and discounts are still managed in the Shopify admin, and editable content can sit in a CMS. You only need a developer when you want to change a layout or add a feature. That can be us, month to month, or any competent React developer.

What is the difference between headless Shopify and Shopify Hydrogen?

Headless Shopify is the approach: a custom storefront connected to Shopify's back end. Hydrogen is one way to build it, using Shopify's own React framework hosted on Oxygen. Next.js is the other common way. Both use the same Storefront API and the same Shopify checkout.

How much does maintenance cost after a headless storefront launches?

Hosting on Oxygen is free on Shopify plans except Starter. A headless CMS such as Sanity adds $0 to $500 a month depending on usage. Market retainers for ongoing development run $2,000 to $8,000 a month, but many stores need far less once the build is stable. If you want us on hand afterwards, we agree it month to month, never by the hour.

If a stock theme is capping what your store can charge, book the free 30-minute call and we will tell you plainly whether headless is worth it for you.
