Key takeaways
- Google Ads catches buyers who already know what they want. Search and Shopping campaigns run on exact-match keywords and your product feed.
- Meta Ads creates demand earlier, in Feed and Reels, using lookalike audiences and retargeting before the buyer has searched for anything.
- A store with clear branded search demand usually gets cheaper, better-converting clicks from Google Ads on its own name. A store launching a new product category usually needs Meta Ads first to build that demand.
- Meant runs performance marketing as a stoppable monthly retainer starting at $2,000. It is never a percentage of ad spend, and ad accounts are opened in your name.
- Landing page quality decides whether either platform works, more than how the media budget is split between them.
Which Platform Wins for Ecommerce
Most Google Ads vs Meta Ads ecommerce debates ask the wrong question. Neither platform wins outright. Google Ads wins when the buyer already knows what they want and types it into a search bar. Meta Ads wins when the buyer has to be shown the product before they know they want it. That is the decision. The rest is detail.
At Meant we run both, on the same retainer, for stores selling worldwide. For a new store, our default recommendation is simple. If people already search for your product category by name, start with Google Shopping and capture that demand. If you are selling something new, or something people don't yet think to search for, start with Meta to create the demand. Add Google once your brand name starts turning up in searches.
How Google Ads Sells: Capturing Demand That Already Exists
Google Ads is an intent machine. Someone has a need, types it, and sees your ad. You pay to be present at a moment that was going to happen anyway.
Search campaigns and exact-match keywords
Search campaigns show text ads against the keywords you choose. Exact match keeps your ads on queries that mean the same thing as your keyword, which stops spend leaking into loosely related searches. For a store, the terms worth paying for are specific: your brand name plus a product, model numbers, sizes, and phrases that signal a purchase.
Branded terms are usually the cheapest and best-converting clicks you will buy, because the person was already looking for you. Generic category terms cost more because every competitor bids on them. Across industries, the average Google Search click costs $2.96, and ecommerce sits at the cheap end of the industry range at $1.16, according to 2026 benchmark data.
Shopping and Performance Max on the product feed
Google Shopping ads don't run on keywords you write. They run on your product feed: titles, images, prices and stock levels sent to Google Merchant Center. Google matches the feed to searches. So the feed is the targeting. A vague product title costs you impressions. A missing size or colour costs you the click.
Performance Max takes the same feed and creative and spreads it across Search, Shopping, YouTube, Display and Gmail from one campaign. You give up some control over where the money goes in exchange for reach. It works when the feed is clean and conversion tracking is honest. It wastes money when either is weak.
The buyer Google Ads is built for
The Google buyer is near the end of the decision. They are comparing prices, checking delivery, choosing between two tabs. That is why Google Shopping averages a 6.2% conversion rate against 1.4% for Meta catalogue ads, per a 2026 cost comparison. The limit is equally plain. Google captures demand. It cannot create it. If nobody searches for your product, there is nothing to bid on.
How Meta Ads Sells: Creating Demand Before the Search
Meta is a discovery platform, not a search one. Nobody opens Instagram to shop for a candle. They open it to scroll, and a good ad interrupts them with something they didn't know they wanted.
Feed and Reels creative
On Meta, the creative does most of the targeting. Advantage+ Shopping campaigns, the standard ecommerce format, lean on broad audiences and let the algorithm find buyers based on who responds to each ad. That puts the weight on what you show. Short vertical video for Reels. Static images and carousels for Feed. The product in use within the first second, not after a logo sting.
Creative also wears out. An ad that sells well for a few weeks will eventually stop, and the only fix is a new one. A store running Meta needs a steady supply of fresh assets, not one hero video.
Retargeting and lookalike audiences
Retargeting shows ads to people who have already visited, viewed a product or left something in the cart. Dynamic product ads pull straight from your catalogue, so each person sees the item they looked at. Lookalike audiences start from your customer list and find people who resemble it. Both depend on the Meta Pixel and the Conversions API sending clean purchase data back. Bad tracking means the algorithm learns from the wrong people.
The buyer Meta Ads is built for
The Meta buyer hasn't started looking. They need to see the product, understand it and trust it before they buy. Conversion rates reflect that: Meta campaigns average 1.85% against 3.75% for Google Search, according to 2026 CPA benchmarks. The same source frames it cleanly: Google captures demand, Meta creates and nurtures it. Meta's broader reach often produces more total revenue despite the lower per-click conversion.
Ads also need something to carry. Good creative still needs a site built to hold the attention it earns, one that explains a complex or unfamiliar product clearly before the buyer decides to trust it.
Google Ads vs Meta Ads for Ecommerce: Side by Side
| Factor | Google Ads | Meta Ads |
|---|---|---|
| Funnel stage | Bottom: the buyer is ready to choose | Top and middle: the buyer is discovering |
| Buyer intent | High. They searched for it | Low to start. They were scrolling |
| Creative demand | Moderate. Clean feed, sharp ad copy, good product images | High. A steady flow of new video and image ads |
| Cost per click | Higher. Ecommerce averages $1.16 | Lower. General ecommerce averages $0.67 |
| Conversion rate | Higher. Shopping averages 6.2% | Lower. Catalogue ads average 1.4% |
| Measurement | Cleaner. Search to click to purchase is a short line | Messier. Many buyers see an ad, leave, and buy later through another channel |
| Speed to first result | Fast, if search demand already exists | Slower. Campaigns need conversion volume to exit the learning phase |
| Best fit | Known categories, branded demand, comparison shoppers | New categories, visual products, brand launches |
Two notes on that table. First, a cheap click is not a cheap sale. Meta's lower CPC is often cancelled out by its lower conversion rate, so compare cost per acquisition, not cost per click. Second, Meta is getting more expensive. From 2025 to 2026, average Meta CPM rose 20.1% and CPA rose 38.1%, per the same benchmark set. Last year's numbers will not survive this year's auction.
When Each Platform Is the Right Call
Place your store in one of these lists. If it sits in both, you have a choice of order, not a choice of platform.
When Google Ads should come first
- People already search for your category by name: running shoes, linen bedding, espresso machines.
- Your brand already has search demand from press, wholesale, retail partners or word of mouth.
- You sell products with model numbers, refills, spare parts or replacements that buyers look up directly.
- Buyers compare prices and specifications before they buy.
- Your creative capacity is thin, but your product data is clean.
When Meta Ads should come first
- You are launching a product or category people don't yet know to search for.
- The product sells on sight: fashion, beauty, homeware, design-led objects.
- The price point allows a decision inside a single scroll.
- You are launching the brand itself and need people to know the name before they can search for it.
- You can produce new video and image ads every week.
What It Costs to Run Either, or Both
Ad spend vs management fee
There are two numbers, and agencies tend to blur them. Ad spend goes to Google or Meta. The management fee goes to whoever runs the campaigns. Keep them apart in your head and in your invoices.
Our performance marketing retainer starts at $2,000 a month. It is month-to-month and you can stop it. Ad accounts are opened in your name, so the data, the history and the billing stay with you if we part ways. The full breakdown is on our performance marketing pricing page. No "get in touch to learn more".
Why a percentage-of-spend fee is the wrong incentive
If the fee rises with your ad spend, the agency is paid to make you spend more, not to make the spend work. Turning off a wasteful campaign cuts their income. Moving budget into the cheaper channel that converts better cuts their income. That arrangement rewards the wrong behaviour every month. A flat retainer removes the conflict. We earn the same whether you spend a little or a lot, so the only reason to recommend more spend is that it pays.
What a weak landing page costs you on either platform
Google and Meta charge for the click or the impression whatever happens next. Send that traffic to a slow page with generic product shots and an unclear price, and both budgets leak at the same rate. The arithmetic is blunt: double the conversion rate and you halve the cost of each sale, on both platforms, without touching the media budget.
Most of the waste we fix sits on the page, not in the campaign. We cover the common ones in landing page mistakes that waste Google Ads clicks. When the problem is the storefront itself, we rebuild it. A headless Shopify build keeps products, stock and checkout running on Shopify while replacing the front end with custom code, so pages load faster and the brand looks less like a theme. A bespoke build on Next.js is the other route, priced by scope rather than a template fee.
How We'd Decide for Your Store
Here is the framework. Run it yourself before you spend anything.
- Measure search demand. Check Google Search Console and Keyword Planner for your brand name and your category terms. Real volume means Google can start earning straight away.
- Audit your creative capacity. If you can't produce new ads every week, Meta will stall. Be honest about this one.
- Fix the landing page first. Check mobile speed, product clarity, price, delivery terms and reviews. Neither platform rescues a page that doesn't convert.
- Check your conversion volume. Meta's Advantage+ Shopping campaigns now need 25 conversions a week to exit the learning phase, down from 50 before April 2026, according to this setup guide. If your price per sale makes that unreachable, start with Google.
- Start with one, then add the other. Prove one channel, then layer in the second and judge both on blended revenue, not on each platform's own reporting.
Ads are one part of the job. If the answer to step three is a rebuild, or step two needs a creative pipeline, we handle that too. See the full range of services we run alongside ads.

Frequently asked questions
Can I run Google Ads and Meta Ads at the same time for an ecommerce store?
Yes, and most stores past the early stage should. Meta introduces the product, and Google catches the buyer when they search for it later. Keep separate budgets for each, but judge them together on total revenue, because each platform will claim credit for the same sale.
Which platform is cheaper per click for ecommerce?
Meta. General ecommerce on Meta averages a $0.67 CPC, against $1.16 on Google. Google Shopping converts far better, though, so the cost per sale often favours Google. Compare cost per acquisition, not cost per click.
Do I need different landing pages for Google Ads and Meta Ads?
Usually, yes. A Google visitor knows what they want, so send them to a product page with price, stock and delivery up front. A Meta visitor needs more persuasion: the product in use, the story and the proof. One site can serve both through different entry points.
How much budget do I need to start testing Google Ads vs Meta Ads?
For Meta, testing campaigns need $30 to $50 a day as a minimum to produce meaningful data. For Google, the budget depends on what your core search terms cost and how many clicks you need to see a pattern. Our retainer is separate from ad spend and starts at $2,000 a month.
Does TikTok or Pinterest change the Google vs Meta decision?
Not much. Both are discovery platforms, so they compete for Meta's role in your plan, not Google's. Prove one discovery channel before adding another. We run Google and Meta, and we'd rather do two channels properly than five badly.
How long before Google Ads or Meta Ads shows real sales, not just clicks?
Google is usually faster when search demand already exists, because buyers arrive ready to purchase. Meta takes longer. Its campaigns need 25 conversions a week to leave the learning phase and settle. Judge either on sales and cost per acquisition, never on clicks alone.
